Winchendon Board of Selectmen unanimously recommended 28 of 30 warrant articles for the May 18 Annual Town Meeting, with Vice Chair Tiffany Newton presiding in the absence of Chair Andrew Beauvais and Member Melissa Blanchard. The board declined to recommend Article 26, which involves $68,000 in circuit breaker funds designated for special education, siding with opponents who argued the money belongs to the town under law; School Committee member Michael Barbaro had urged the funds remain with the school. Vice Chair Newton expressed concern about the recurring reliance on free cash and urged Town Manager William McKinney to make structural budget cuts going forward.
The board took no position on Articles 28 and 29, both citizen petitions. Articles 11 and 26 will be presented by the school at town meeting.
